… is the great success in our projects. The women in Ghunsa are proud of their compost, which they have prepared as they learned. Next on the agenda is the production of cabbage seeds. What our expert also learned is the great idea of using straw in the greenhouse to protect the plants from frost. Of course, this is immediately included in the program.
… new happiness ?. The apple trees in Chyangsar are prepared for the next season. Fertilized, pruned and given a protective coating, we hope for a rich harvest this year. Fruits are especially for the children something very special – a delicious experience and healthy to boot.
Many thanks to Fair Styria for the continuous support of the model farm.
.. the trees receive the spring pruning.. almost all 200 trees are ready to sprout.. a biological protective layer is prepared
.. fertilized, watered and protected, they will soon start to bloom
… the steps from the pre-grown plants to the harvest are trained together with the experts. Soon the model farm in Chyangsar will be certified, so that the vegetables can be sold on the market as organic vegetables. In addition to maintaining soil health, these products can also generate a higher yield.
Many thanks to Fair Styria, who faithfully accompany us here.
.. very precisely the progress in the greenhouse is documented.. the seedlings can be planted soon.. each vegetable bed is discussed how it went.. soon vegetable will be planted here again according to the plan
.. early planted vegetables are protected with foliage
… what is happening right now at the model farm in Ghunsa. Many things have been prepared for a long time, but now there is always great news. The first products are being made in the drying house, the greenhouse for the new nursery is ready, the self-built fence protects the beds. The women from the certification program are taking a close look at everything so that they can then use it themselves.
The professional support provided by our partners Hasera and Social Work Institute can thus have a lasting effect.
Many thanks to the state of Vorarlberg and Chay-ya Austria, through which this project was made possible.
.. the first vegetables are dried.. our expert explains the drying process to the women.. in this greenhouse the first nut and apple trees are grown
.. the women have built their own fences around the vegetable fields
… is a big issue in all villages, sometimes too much, sometimes too little. in Chyangsar the reservoir is already empty again. In heavy rain slips again and again a piece of the field. Slowly the women develop a feeling for it and small ditches are made where water can run off well or flow into the prepared basin. Watering is still mainly done by hand but there are plans to lay hoses where it is absolutely necessary.
The ongoing development of the model farm is only possible with the support of Fair Styria.
.. water is largely still poured by hand, if possible from the retention basin.. unfortunately, there is not sufficient water in the basin.. the experts advise how to use hoses and ditches to support irrigation
… of new greenhouses runs faster and faster every time. A new greenhouse was able to be built in Merangding. Our partner Rajkumar Rai already knows exactly how to do it. All materials are obtained locally and built by local forces. So for the coming season, the women here can also grow their vegetables all year round. What a great opportunity.
We wish them much success and thank Fair Styria, who with Merangding are looking after a second village with us.
.. the wood was cut locally as was already customary and brought to the village.. the stones are also mined by hand and carried to the model farm.. now already the 6th greenhouse in the villages with the “Profiplan”.. our expert accompanies the construction now already with some experience
.. the fixation outside and the windows need to be fixed, then the greenhouse is ready
.. Kunikhop is called because, like Karnali (a very remote province in northern Nepal), there is virtually no access to transportation, education or health services. The remoteness of this place is the reason for Roots for Life’s outreach. In addition to the model farm, the women participate in a certification program. The women came to the two-day training on organic farming with compost and notebooks. They learn mainly through their active participation in digging, planting and mulching, but some writing down and drawing is also done.
.. 24 Women from Kunikhop bring herbs from their gardens for the liquid fertilizer.. the new fields are prepared at the model farm.. the women learn to make liquid fertilizer from plants.. despite the cold, they attend classes attentively so that they can apply what they have learned in their fields.
.. the women who can write (especially the younger among them) write down the information on their notepads.
… in Kunikhop are not very popular and the women understandably want toilets closer to the house and in a “modern” form. However, instead of toilets with wastewater tanks, a project is to be started in which modern composting toilets can produce compost for agriculture in a low-odor and structured way. For this purpose, a local partner could also be won, who will accompany us in this regard. During an excursion, the women visited the modern composting toilets and were enthusiastic. We are very curious to see how the implementation will succeed.
… in the fields of the model farm in Chyangsar, which will give our next harvest the strength and energy it needs. Also these activities are done together with our permaculture expert and our women can still learn a lot by the support. And the good yield shows them that the work is absolutely worth it. Additionally, this knowledge will also be important for our certification, so “compost be thankful”.
Many thanks to @fair styria, which supports this project sustainably.
..the compost has now become great soil..fresh compost is brought to the fields..compost is important especially after strongly consuming vegetables..the covered compost heap is carefully removed completely
..even in the shade, the experts are testing new, well-fertilized fields
.. Women in Merangding are trained in detail and receive the material for cultivation at home. All of them are totally eager and excited about this new opportunity. The plan was to have 25 members for the new cooperative, but the number of interested women is increasing daily and so we are already at 35.
The work is progressing rapidly, in 2 days the basic training could be carried out as “field training”. It is nice that many women were already able to participate themselves. For this training, the women also brought their equipment from home, which will be supplemented if necessary. So they learned composting, mulching, creating raised beds and gardening. In addition, they will make microorganisms for soil improvement and liquid fertilizers for crops. Soon they will be able to implement what they have learned in their own fields. The women are very excited about the model farm and greenhouse, which will serve as a community center for everyone in Merangding. There, information about permaculture and organic farming will be made available to all, a seed database will be created, and trainings will be held.
Many thanks to Fair Styria, who made this project possible with their support.
.. The women participate in the training with great enthusiasm.. Each family receives seed packets to plant at home.. By the way, the vegetable seeds were donated by Styrian nurseries (Thanks Lena Kremser for the collection!)... Liquid fertilizer from plants is made
.. The new information is noted down to be able to apply it at home
