    Our expert of tomorrow …

… is learning a lot about permaculture theoretically and practically at Hasera. She is from Chyangsar, has been with us on scholarship since 2016 and has successfully completed grade 11 and 12 in Sallerie, as well as an agricultural college. She is doing her internship with our permaculture expert Hasera and an organic farm that produces for sale.

She is having a lot of fun and we are looking forward to her being able to use her knowledge in the villages.

Many thanks to our patrons who accompany the girls through their support over many years. Many thanks also to Hasera for providing a training place.

    .. Preparing the sowing
… lots of fun planting rice, unfortunately not possible in the home village ?
.. working in the greenhouse is also part of it
… harvesting is the most fun of course

.. planting the small plants needs loving hands

  • Through the mud …

    Through the mud …

… the van with the stoves had to fight its way to Kunikhop. It is still the rainy season, so some of the roads are hardly passable. The women were all the happier to be able to carry the stoves home safely on foot.

Now only the pipe has to be led safely outside, then nothing stands in the way of a smoke-free warm kitchen ?

Many thanks to @fair styria, whose support made this possible.

.. after several attempts, the transporter can move on.
.. the women are very happy
.. the stoves are also transported in the basket on the head.
.. especially in Kunikhop, some of the houses are far away from the road.

.. the pipe still has to go through the roof, then it is safe to cook.

  • Sustainability …

    Sustainability …

… also means for us to ensure that the projects in the villages can continue without external help. Three girls from the first college course are now training to become social workers at the Social Work Institute – Kathmandu. This will enable them to take on many important tasks in the villages.

We are very happy and wish them interesting experiences in their training.

Many thanks to all the sponsors, only through their support could the girls come this far, as well as to the Social Work Institute, which also awarded scholarships for the girls.

… the 3 girls from Chyangsar and Ghunsa were in the first round for the higher grade 12 certificate.
.. besides intensive learning, concentration is practised again and again
.. together with the teachers, they work on various topics.
.. they also have to train physically for their work on the land.

.. the girls live in the attached hostel

  • Almost finished …

    Almost finished …

… is now also the training hall in Merangding. Unfortunately, the funding already promised by the government for the interior fittings and installations has not come. But with our combined efforts, a solution will be found.

Things are going well in the greenhouse and in the fields and the compost toilet is also ready.

Many thanks to the Schoeck Family Foundation, whose support ensures the operation of the model farm.

… the design of the front was particularly beautiful in Merganding.
… the composting toilet requires no additional installation
.. Boxes have been integrated into the wall, the furniture is still being worked on.
… in the greenhouse several young plants are already waiting to be used in the field.
… as part of the “fieldschool” everything is labelled and biological insect protection is practised.

… the beautiful courgette show the success

    Together at last …

… our girls can live in Sallerie from autumn. For the 11th and 12th grade they cannot stay in the villages, the walk to school would simply be too long with more than 4 hours. So far we have only been able to rent individual rooms, now they can live here together and we hope to be able to run the lower 2 floors as a hostel in the longer term.

We are currently working intensively on the financing for this.

Many thanks to the sponsors who have accompanied the girls until the end of grade 10. We hope to get more support for the higher education which is starting well.

… the rooms are in a relatively new house.
… they are bright and already furnished so they can be moved in.
… the kitchen could be ready for all the girls
… the girls could grow their own vegetables in the small garden.

.. the cooperative could use the business premises as a synergy.

  • Safer and warm …

    Safer and warm …

… are the new stoves for the women in Merangding. They can cook with them and the smoke goes outside through the flue. For the children, too, there is less danger of reaching into the open fire or falling.

    The joy is great ?

Many thanks to @fair styria for the financial support.

.. the stoves are curiously inspected immediately after delivery
.. instead of open fireplaces, stoves with flues can now be used
.. like everything else, the material is carried on the back and into the house on foot.
.. proudly presenting the installed stove

.. instead of the open fireplace the metal stove is now used

  • Simply top …

    Simply top …

… are our scholarship girls from Chyangsar, Ghunsa, Merangding, Kunikop and Kathmandu. ALL 14 have passed the SEE (the Nepalese central examination after grade 10), 2 of them are top of the school. These 3 girls with excellent results are currently fighting for admission to nurse training in Kathmandu. We keep our fingers crossed for them.

Thank you to all the sponsors who believe in our girls. Now that we are moving towards higher education for the first time, we are hoping for more sponsors – please spread the word ? and contact us at office@rootsforlife.info.

  • Everything…

    Everything…

… from the training sessions for the use of compost toilets is now being put into practice. One is also being built on the model farm to demonstrate everything. The material is distributed and the families will now finalise their compost toilets.

We are happy that compost can be produced for the gardens.

Many thanks to Fair Styria for supporting this sustainable initiative.

… the composting toilet on the model farm serves as a model for everyone.
.. the composting toilet is inspected closely by all.
.. the information material is to ensure the correct use of the composting toilets
.. The material for the composting toilets is ready for distribution.
.. several times material has to be put into the baskets and carried home.

.. the men also watch with interest as the strong women carry everything home ?

  • The girls…

    The girls…

… are strengthened through joint activities. It is important to strengthen their self-esteem and self-confidence in order to protect them from assault. They have a lot of fun identifying their strengths and can talk about sensitive issues.

Many thanks to our patrons who make this empowerment possible.

… together they can master difficult situations
.. Building trust and talking about themselves is not easy for the girls
.. their strengths are put down on paper in a playful way
.. for some of them it is new and not easy to reveal something about themselves.

… at the end they are all very proud of their results – their strengths.

  • In front of the curtain …

In front of the curtain …

… we would like to call on our farm supervisor Jaya Laxmi Magar ? today. Since she has been running the farm, we can see what has already been learned and what is possible. The pre-breeding in the greenhouse has worked out great and already in June she can proudly sell the harvest. External customers still have little chance, the vegetables go to friends of the farm who are only too happy to buy them.

We thank Jaya Laxmi Magar for her great work.

Many thanks also to all those who have supported the establishment of the model farm in Chyangsar over the past years and ensure its ongoing operation. Especially Fair Styria and the Schöck Family Foundation.

.. Broccoli – a new vegetable for the region that is doing very well
.. Zuccini – also behind the house, every space is used
.. Cauliflower – was known but not grown – now very much in demand
.. the harvest is proudly weighed

… packed in boxes the team takes it to Kathmandu
